One of the largest animals on Earth launches clear of the water, lands with a sound you feel in your chest, then surfaces a few metres away to have a look at you. That happens here, on the Humpback Highway, between July and October.
Every winter humpbacks travel thousands of kilometres from Antarctica to the warm, sheltered water of the Southern Great Barrier Reef — an ideal nursery for mothers and calves, where the young learn to breach, tail-slap and hold their breath.
We hold a 100% sighting record. They're wild animals, so no two tours are the same, but spy-hops, tail slaps and curious whales lingering alongside the hull are routine. Our crew keeps the encounter safe and respectful under Advanced Ecotourism guidelines, with commentary on what you're actually watching.
No drive to Hervey Bay needed — the whales are right here, and we're 45 minutes north of it.
